Bungee cords are used almost every day in one way or another. At home and on the road.
So let’s explore the reasons as to why these bungees should be avoided or used if push comes to shove with extreme caution.
1. Top Cause Of Bungee Eye Injuries
Bungee cords: Bungees are one of the most causes of eye related injuries.
Yes, it is hard to believe because we use them almost everyday and they are used at home and at work. When we tie and secure things down like a package we sometimes try to extend the reach of the cord to save space.
But when we over extend this reach we are setting ourselves up for an accident.
A cord has built in it what is called stored energy. And that energy inside if pulled to far and with enough force will come back at you at a rate of at least 60 miles an hour and right at your eye.

2. Types Of Bungee Cords:
Plastic Snap Hook
Rubber Straps
Rope Elastic
Nylon Webbing
Even though all of these above listed are in different types and styles, they still have that stored energy built in and can have a recoil effect.
3. Alternatives
Ropes Or Non Stretchy Cords:
These ropes and non stretchy cords are good alternatives because there is no stretching or recoil. They can be knotted and tied together to make more space.
Ratchet Style Straps:
These are also very good to use in your RV. They have teeth that grip the webbing tight and snug. No recoil. They also make some that have locks built in them. “See Below”

4.What To Do If You Get A Bungee Injury
Emergency Room:
If you are one of the unfortunate ones who gets a bungee injury don’t think that just putting a cold compress will make the hurt ease and go away. No, No it won’t . Get yourself to the emergency room and don’t drive yourself because you can’t see what you are doing.
5. Long Term Possible Side Effects
Results Of Bungee Injury:
- Bleeding Inside the Eye
- Cuts to the Eye
- Traumatic Cataracts (clouding of the lens of the eye as a result of the blow)
- Retina Tearing or Detachment from the Back of Eye
- Complete Eye Loss or Blindness
6. Treatment For Bungee Eye Injury
Surgery:
Surgery is required in most bungee cases. It all depends on what type of injury that has been sustained. Sometimes the eyeball comes detached. Or retina tearing . Some times the eye is soo bad that nothing can be done.
Eye Drops:
Eye drops will be given after the surgery and will have to be administered every day and twice a day. Sometimes you might have to see the eye doctor everyday for weeks to check the pressure in the affected eye.
Sleeping:
You can’t sleep flat in your bed for weeks to months. You must sleep at an incline. Also, the eye is going to be sensitive to light. The doctor will probably give you a plastic eye patch with holes in it. This is to protect the eye when you sleep from your hands so as not to rub or scratch it.
Hind sight 20-20
So as it goes I guess it takes getting slapped by that bungee before we change our habits.
Come to your senses and use the bad boys of strap downs for all of your RV uses.
These lashing ratchet straps and gorilla ties are calling your name so answer that call.
I have heeded the call and will never go back.
